The transept represents one of the most significant elements of Galician iconography, marking the crossroads of roads and the atriums of the churches. There is talk of Christianization, but also of rituals and legends. Throughout the municipality of Boiro you will find more than a hundred transepts cataloged of this type of religious sculpture in the open air. As you can see they consist of three parts (base, rod and cross) and are carved in stone. Its typology is varied.

  • Transepts of "clothes", of a cross. They are the simplest. The most representative samples will be found in Corrillo, San Ramón de Bealo and A Charca.
  • Transepts of "loreto" or "capeliña", that have in their cusp a small cavity that safeguards the image of the Virgin. They are very characteristic in O Barbanza Lands. You will find an interesting sample of this type of cruise in front of the chapel of Loreto, in Vilariño, and another one in Boiro de Arriba, very near the rectory house.
  • Transepts of three crosses or "calvarios", rare in Galicia. In most cases they finished the Vía Crucis campestres. It consists of three crosses on an octagonal base and quadrangular platform of two degrees. It stands out the cruise of Calvary of San Roque, in Cespón, ending a long Via Crucis that began in Abanqueiro.
