The Samaín, the Celtic festival par excellence, marked the end of the harvests and the beginning of the new year. Also the connection with the spirits of the dead who, on this date, were authorized to walk among the living, giving people the opportunity to meet their deceased ancestors.
This ancestral feast has come to this day coinciding with the eve of the Christian feast of All Saints; And after recovering some old customs, such as emptying pumpkins carving grotesque creatures and then placing a candle lit inside, thus frightening witches and evil spirits.
It is indisputable the special relationship that is maintained in Galicia with death. The Holy Companion is the best example of this communion. Over the centuries, the Celtic New Year holiday is now a party full of fun and an excuse to have fun.
